The Khyber Pakhtunkhwa Textbook Board (KPTB), Peshawar is a successor of West Pakistan Textbook Board which was established in 1962. Prior to West Pakistan Textbook Board, there was no regular system of printing, publishing, and distributing textbooks. The blue eyed publisher used to develop and print the textbooks at their own and supply to the schools at personal contacts.

In 1962, the Government decided to introduce a regular system of production and distribution of textbooks. The West Pakistan Textbook Board an autonomous body was established beside East Pakistan Textbook Board. On disintegration of one unit in 1971 from provinces including NWFP were constituted, at that time two regional offices of West Pakistan.

The Khyber Pakhtunkhwa Textbook Board plays a vital role in boosting up of the educational sector of the province. The main function of the Board is to prepare quality and error free textbooks well in time for the students of the whole province including far flung and remote areas of the Province. As per NTLM Policy 2007, the KPTB made an advertisement for development of new textbooks through national private publishers having the required criteria according to approved curriculum notified by the Directorate of Curriculum & Teachers Education (DCTE), Abbottabad. After registration of qualified publishers, their developed textbooks are reviewed at different stages. After getting NOC from the competent authority i.e. DCTE, Abbottabad and selection from the Provincial Selection Committee, these textbooks are notified and introduced in the government schools of the province. Concerned publisher(s) of the selected textbook(s) issue print license to the KPTB for its printing by getting royalty against the printed quantity as per approved slabs.

The Khyber Pakhtunkhwa Textbook Board came into existence on 29th March, 1971 through an Ordinance. Since then, as per given mandate, the Board used to print textbooks through tender policy (competitive bidding) as per KPPRA Rules 2014 by awarding certain numbers of textbooks to them as per their capacity/performance accordingly to the Board’s laid down criteria  and procedure. The printing bills are paid as per Board’s approved criteria.  The warehouse of KPTB has hosted 50 million books of different subjects from class KG to 12th and provides 300 circles of 25 districts in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa.
